Saturday’s Snapshot (surat al-sabat): لقطة السبت


Abu Dhabi city isn’t very old; it’s not like being in Cairo or Istanbul, where the “old city” goes back centuries. Here “old” buildings might be from the 1950s or even the 1970s.  The city exists in a constant state of re-invention, which sometimes results in good things, like the long stretch of waterfront parks and walking paths that didn’t exist twelve years ago. But re-invention also brings an almost constant hum of demolition and construction: this picture is taken from the Corniche, looking past a circular fountain towards a building that’s being knocked down.  When I got closer to the building, I could see shreds of old carpets and flaps of wallpaper: the remnants of lives that have been displaced to…?

I know I’ve been posting a lot of pictures here lately and not many words (which some of you may find a welcome respite) — adjusting to a new job and a new computer have taken more time than I thought. Words are coming (be warned) but in the meantime, here’s a sign to consider:
