Reverb #18: Try

I thought I had an answer for this one, and then we just got back from seeing Flying Karamazov Brothers at the Minetta Lane Theater, and now I have a different answer.

Prompt: Try. What do you want to try next year? Is there something you wanted to try in 2010? What happened when you did / didn’t go for it?

Last summer, I asked a few friends if they’d be willing to do a trapeze lesson with me, ala Carrie Bradshaw in “Sex in the City.” I’ve always wanted to do the trapeze, in part b/c I’m a little bit afraid of heights and so this seemed like a pretty good way to conquer that fear, and I thought asking friends to come with me/bear witness would force me to sign up.

But you know, there were weekends away and conflicting schedules and what with one thing and another, I never signed up for the lesson,  Then school started, the weather got cold (should I continue with my list of excuses)  — I wanted to do the class over on the west side, outside, along the river. Somehow a big gym in midtown doesn’t have the same je ne sais quoi, right?

And so my “try” for 2011 (in addition to ridding myself of the phrase “I’m trying…”) was to get my ass to a trapeze class.

But then…the Brothers. Who aren’t brothers, aren’t Russian, and don’t fly. But they juggle, my friends, wow, do they juggle: cleavers, eggs, flaming torches, jello, wet soap, champagne bottles, frying pans.  Here’s what else they do: play the piano, sing, clog dance, comedy improv (while juggling), and make really hellishly bad puns.

It’s a little late, I guess, for me to run away and join the circus, but dammit, I’m going to become a better juggler. I can do a mild three-lemon toss about five times, in the produce section of the grocery store, but I want to get good. I’m already pretty good with bad puns, but how cool would it be to whip out a few flaming torches and sling them around at the next PTA meeting?

I mean really. I’m a mom with two sons, a full-time job, a blog, volunteer work at two schools, and a marriage. I’m already juggling, I just want to make it literal instead of figurative.
